Detector spacing — how to read the rules, step by step

How a fire alarm layout comes together

Read NFPA 72 in the free NFPA viewer. NFPA offers read-only access to current editions at no cost. This page explains the concepts; it does not reproduce the code’s tables. Edition referenced: NFPA 72-2022 with notes on earlier editions — verify against the edition adopted by your AHJ.

Detection. Smoke detectors on a smooth ceiling start from a nominal 30 ft spacing, and the 0.7 rule says no point on the ceiling can be more than 0.7 of that spacing from a detector. Heat detectors are different: each model has a listed spacing on its data sheet, and the code reduces it as ceilings get taller because hot gases cool as they rise. Beams, joists, sloped ceilings, and HVAC airflow all move detectors around.

Notification. Strobe candela is picked from room size, mounting (wall or ceiling), and — for ceiling strobes — ceiling height. The wall tables assume the strobe is centered on a wall; move it off-center and you have to treat the room as bigger. Strobes visible from one spot must flash in sync. Horns are judged against the ambient noise, and voice systems against intelligibility.

Secondary power. The batteries must run the system in standby for 24 hours and then in full alarm for 5 minutes (longer for voice systems). Add up standby and alarm currents from the data sheets, convert to amp-hours, and apply the safety margin — raised to 25% in the 2022 edition from the 20% used in earlier editions. With 0.25 A standby and 2.0 A alarm, that’s about 6.17 Ah before margin and about 7.7 Ah after, so the next standard size up goes in.

FAQ

How far apart should smoke detectors be?+

On a smooth ceiling, NFPA 72 uses a nominal spacing of 30 ft, with every point on the ceiling within 0.7 of that spacing (21 ft) of a detector. Beams, joists, slopes, and airflow change the layout. Read the rules free at nfpa.org/freeaccess.

What candela strobe do I need?+

It depends on the room size, whether the strobe is on the wall or ceiling, ceiling height, and whether it is centered. For example, a strobe centered on one wall of a 20 ft × 20 ft room can be 15 cd; larger rooms need a higher rating or more strobes. Use the visible appliance tables in your edition.

How do you calculate fire alarm battery size?+

Multiply total standby current by 24 hours, add total alarm current multiplied by 5 minutes (converted to hours), then apply the safety margin your edition requires — 25% in the 2022 edition, 20% in earlier editions — and pick the next standard battery size. Voice systems need a longer alarm duration.

Are heat detectors spaced like smoke detectors?+

No. Heat detectors use their own UL-listed spacing from the data sheet, reduced for higher ceilings with the code’s multipliers. Smoke detectors start from a nominal code spacing because they have no listed spacing.
