How to pick the receptacle rating, step by step

The receptacle-rating questions inspectors actually write up

Look up Table 210.21(B)(3) in the free NFPA viewer. NFPA offers read-only access to current NEC editions at no cost. This page explains how the rules work; it does not reproduce the tables. Written to the 2023 NEC — verify against the edition your AHJ has adopted.

Single or multiple — that is the first question. A single receptacle is one contact device on its yoke; a duplex is two receptacles. When a single receptacle is the only thing on an individual branch circuit, 210.21(B)(1) requires it to be rated at least as high as the circuit. When two or more receptacles share the circuit, Table 210.21(B)(3) lists which ratings are allowed for each circuit size — which is why a 15 A duplex is fine on a 20 A kitchen circuit.

Then the load limits. 210.21(B)(2) caps the cord-and-plug load on a receptacle, and 210.23 caps what the circuit can serve: a single plug-in appliance is held to 80% of the circuit rating, and fastened-in-place equipment sharing a 15 A or 20 A circuit with lighting or plug loads is held to 50%. Range receptacles get their own allowance in 210.21(B)(4), tied to the Table 220.55 demand.

2023 change. 10 A branch circuits are now recognized for lighting and a short list of specific loads, and they cannot serve receptacles. They were inserted as 210.23(A), so the 15/20 A rules are now 210.23(B) and every letter after that moved down one — update your inspection checklists.

Can I put a 15 amp receptacle on a 20 amp circuit?+

Yes, where the circuit has two or more receptacles — Table 210.21(B)(3) allows 15 A or 20 A receptacles on a 20 A circuit, and a duplex counts as two. A single (simplex) receptacle on an individual 20 A branch circuit must be rated at least 20 A under 210.21(B)(1). Look up the table in the free NFPA viewer at nfpa.org/freeaccess.

How much can I plug into a 20 amp circuit?+

Under 210.23, any one cord-and-plug connected item that is not fastened in place may not exceed 80% of the branch-circuit rating — 16 A on a 20 A circuit. The total load may not exceed the circuit rating.

Can a 50 amp range receptacle go on a 40 amp circuit?+

Yes. Table 210.21(B)(3) allows a 40 A or 50 A receptacle on a 40 A circuit, and 210.21(B)(4) lets a range receptacle rating be based on the single-range demand load from Table 220.55.

What changed in the 2023 NEC?+

The 2023 NEC recognized 10 A branch circuits for lighting and a few specific loads, added as 210.23(A). That pushed the 15/20 A, 30 A, 40/50 A, and larger-than-50 A rules down one letter. 10 A circuits cannot supply receptacle outlets.

What is the 50 percent rule for fastened-in-place equipment?+

On a 15 A or 20 A branch circuit that also supplies lighting, cord-and-plug equipment, or both, the total rating of fastened-in-place utilization equipment (other than luminaires) may not exceed 50% of the circuit rating.
