Frequently asked questions

When do I use a T&M ticket?

T&M tickets are used for any work performed outside the original contract scope — change-directive work, extras, force-account work, emergency repairs. The ticket documents what was performed and gets the customer's signature so you can bill for it.

What markup should I apply?

Markup rates are negotiated in your contract. Common ranges: 10-15% on labor and equipment, 10-25% on materials, 5-10% on subcontracted work. The template lets you set markup per line and per category.

Does the customer have to sign every ticket?

Yes — and ideally the same day the work is performed. Unsigned tickets are the #1 reason T&M billing disputes happen. Get the signature while the foreman is still on site.

The single most important construction billing document

A T&M (Time and Material) ticket — also called a force-account ticket, extra-work ticket, or daily ticket — is the contemporaneous record of work performed outside the original contract. Every line on a future T&M invoice must be backed by a signed ticket; without one, you don't get paid.

This template is the standard shape used across general contracting, mechanical, piping, electrical, civil, and structural trades. Print one per day, fill it out as work progresses, and get the customer's signature before the foreman leaves the site. Pair it with a daily field report for full project documentation.

Tip: many GCs and owners now require digital T&M tickets with photo backup. Field PM does this automatically — labor flows from the daily report, materials are scanned in, and the customer signs on screen. No more chasing signatures or losing tickets.
